Nieuwoudtville, in the succulent Karoo Biome in the Northern Cape, is the bulb capital of the world.
The main flower burst occurs in early spring (August September), but in Autumn when the right amount of rain at the precise time falls, the most spectacular phenomenon occurs at Charlie’s Hoek near the Nieuwoudtville botanical gardens (nobody knows who Charlie was despite its being mentioned by Thunberg in 1763). The brunsvigia bosmaniea bloom in their thousands creating the most magical natural display imaginable.
The most amazing thing is that very often there are no other human beings around to share the spectacle.
