Image Criteria and Quality
Resolution, noise and sharpness are all factors that influence and affect image quality.
Images printed to a very high degree of enlargement will highlight all of the above. If you can start with a larger file, the degree of enlargement will be reduced and it stands to reason that the factors mentioned above will be less noticeble
It's not only about size but the quality of the CCD used to capture the original image. So comparint two files of the same size will not necessarily deliver the same result. However if you are stitching multiple files of the same quality, the larger file will yield a better result.
File finishing and print preperation for the intended size and use are as important and if one is heavy handed at this stage the final print may not live up to expectations. Likewise the material being printed on has a massive bearing on the final print. There have been great strides in technology and printing and it is possible to achieve tremendous quality prints at extremely large sizes.
Viewing distance is yet another factor in the equation and the closer one views an images the more apparent pixel size and noise become. A large billboard viewed from across the road has more wiggle room as far as technicalities are concerned than a wallpaper one is standing 2 meters from in a reception area.
Ultimately though, it is about the image itself and what it communicates. This is subjective and open to interpretation. Image selection for and intended space deserves due deliberation and consideration.
The most rewarding experience and utmost appreciation will be achieved when all of the above are considered.
